The Miami Marlins drafted Oxford High shortstop in the second round of the Major League Baseball draft on Sunday.

The 40th-ranked overall prospect, according to MLB.com, was the 56th overall pick. The site estimates the pick to be worth $1.6 million.

Johnson signed with the University of Alabama. He batted .364 with a .546 on-base percentage as a senior with 21 RBIs, helping Oxford reach the Class 6A quarterfinals a year after playing a key role in the Yellow Jackets’ run to a Class 6A state title.

A two-time Alabama Sports Writers Association all-state pick, he was East Alabama Sports Today’s Class 4A-6A All-Calhoun County player of the year for 2024.

“Super proud of him,” Oxford coach Travis Janssen said. “Class kid and class family. Couldn’t have happened to a better kid.

“His combination of confidence, humility, ability and love of the game are separators for him and what makes him special.”
