It may still technically spring but Oxford and Lafayette County are experiencing warmer summertime temperatures this week. The National Weather Service forecast for Oxford on Sunday afternoon is 96 degrees and heat index will be over 100 degrees.

It is time to make sure outdoor pets are given extra care with plenty of shade and water so they do not overheat. Some dog breeds and older animals have less heat tolerance, so be aware of your pet’s health condition. Consider bringing in outdoor pet inside during the hottest part of the day.

Dogs regulate body temperature by panting and rapid mouth breathing. Sometimes, that is not enough in extremely hot temperatures which can lead to serious life threatening emergencies such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke or death. Take precautions to make sure your pet has a way to stay cool during hot days.
