Coffee enthusiasts will soon have two new places to enjoy a cup of java.

On Monday, the Oxford Planning Commission approved a special exception to allow a drive-thru window at a new location for the national coffee chain, 7Brew Coffee, to set up shop on the corner of University Avenue and South 17th Street.

They also approved a variance from the front build line.

Some of the commissioners expressed concerns about the amount of traffic backing up onto University Avenue which will be stacking up in the drive-thru.

Developer John Horne said there will be enough room for about 20 vehicles on the property in the drive-thru and does not expect the lines to ever back up onto University Avenue.

“Our business model is to get people through as quickly as possible,” he said.

7Brew is a national chain with approximately 250 locations throughout the country. The proposed building with be about 510 square feet with double-stack drive-thru lanes and a second story used for storage.

Velvet Ditch Coffee will be remodeling a single-story home on North Lamar Boulevard into a roastery and coffee shop. On Monday, the commission granted a special exception to allow a three-bedroom residential unit in the back of the remodeled building.

Currently, Velvet Ditch Coffee can be purchased online or at several locations in Oxford, including Chicory Market, The Oxford Creamery and Sugar Magnolia, and in Taylor at Offbeat in General.

The new roastery and coffee shop will be located at 1316 N. Lamar Boulevard.
