City leaders consider renovations to two Oxford parks

Two of Oxford’s biggest parks could look very different in the next couple of years.

Oxford Park Commission Director Seth Gaines is asking the Oxford Board of Aldermen to consider spending $500,000 on completely rebuilding Avent Park and $25,000 on having a master plan created for Stone Park.

Gaines is asking the Board to consider demolishing the existing playgrounds at Avent Park and building another in its place.

“The wooden structure has lasted 27+ years,” he said. “Time well served.”

OPC is also working with a Leadership Lafayette group that is currently raising funds to build accessible picnic tables, a wheelchair swing and other ADA playground equipment as the budget allows at Avent Park. Email Abby Evans at abbyevans359@gmail.com for more information.

Stone Park is also overdue for renovations. Some of Gaines’ wish-list items for Stone Park include a new playground and splash pad. He originally requested a new playground, but Mayor Robyn Tannehill said she believes a master plan is a better idea.

“I’d hate to build a new playground and realize later that maybe it wasn’t in the best place,” she said.

While the Board seemed receptive to both requests, they will be considered with the city’s 2024-2025 fiscal year budget which will be voted on in September.
