Oyster Bay Harbor has once again been awarded the Best Harbor winner for the Mid-Atlantic region by US Harbors.

This is the second time in three years that Oyster Bay received the honor, as it also was voted Best Harbor for the Mid-Atlantic in 2021.

Started by US Harbors in 2019, the ‘Best Harbor in the U.S.’ contest allows users to vote on their favorite of over 1,500 coastal and Great Lakes harbors from March to May of each year. US Harbors says the contest ‘truly reflects the pride and passion people feel for their local coastal communities.’

“US Harbors asked the public to vote for their favorite harbor out of more than 1,500 harbors, exemplifying where they had the most passion for where they live, boat and fish,” Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said in a town statement. “We are proud to continue many efforts to keep the vitality of our beautiful harbor, including a highly successful shellfish management program with a soon-to-be expanded hatchery that produces millions of clam and oyster seedlings annually. Working with environmental partners on a variety of initiatives to protect our harbor, we will continue these initiatives to help naturally clean our waterways, protect our shoreline and filter local waters while repopulating shellfish.”

The top honor for best harbor in the country this year went to Block Island, R.I., which was also named the Northeast regional winner. The rest of the top 10 harbors on this year’s list were Destin, Fla.; Padanaram, Mass.; Bristol, R.I.; Shelter Cove, Hilton Head, N.C.; Pillar Point, Princeton, Calif.; Gloucester, Mass.; Charlevoix, Mich.; Brookings, Ore.; and Depoe Bay, Ore.

The crowd-sourced contest is open to the public for online voting out of the more than 1,500 harbors for which US Harbors provides tidal and coastal weather data.

Oyster Bay Harbor is now a two-time winner for the Mid-Atlantic region.

“The protection of our natural assets is a high priority for our town board, and we will continue our vast efforts to protect the quality and resiliency of our waters,” Saladino said in the statement. “We thank US Harbors for this great honor and all who supported Oyster Bay Harbor as the best Mid-Atlantic regional harbor.”
