2 dead after vehicle goes off cliff near Devil's Slide

SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. ( KRON ) — Two people are dead after a vehicle went off a cliff Friday morning in the area of Devil’s Slide between Pacifica and Montara, the California Highway Patrol confirmed. The incident occurred on the southbound lanes of Highway 1 south of the Tom Lantos Tunnel.

Roads were closed in both directions as of 11:40 a.m. and reopened just before 3 p.m.

Highway 1 will be shut down in both directions around the area again on Saturday. The road will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to noon “for police and fire activity,” CHP said.

The vehicle involved, a gray, two-door sedan, dropped approximately 300 to 400 feet down over the embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A helicopter with two lifeguards aboard was put on alert but was unable to fly due to weather conditions.

CHP advised drivers to expect delays and use alternative routes.
