Green Bay Packers Urged To Sign Former Pro Bowl Playmaker

The Green Bay Packers could use some depth at running back after placing AJ Dillon on the injured reserve list due to a neck injury, so they may have to explore the free-agent market to add another player.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox has an interesting suggestion: former Pro Bowl running back Kareem Hunt.

Hunt played for the Cleveland Browns in 2023, rushing for 411 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging a meager three yards per carry over 15 games.

The 29-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Toledo, was originally selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Hunt made the Pro Bowl during his rookie campaign after leading the league with 1,327 rushing yards to go along with eight scores. He logged a robust 4.9 yards per attempt while also hauling in 53 receptions for 455 yards and three touchdowns.

The following year, Hunt was on pace for another Pro Bowl-caliber campaign, but off-the-field issues resulted in him being released after 11 games.

Hunt then landed with the Browns, where he proceeded to spend the next five seasons. He was unable to rediscover his 2017 form, but he did put forth some productive campaigns in Cleveland, most notably in 2020 when he registered 841 yards while reaching the end zone six times as a rusher. Additionally, he caught 38 passes for 304 yards and five touchdowns.

Does Hunt still have Pro Bowl-level production in him? Almost certainly not, especially based on the fact that he posted under four yards per tote the last two seasons. However, he could probably be a reliable member of a committee backfield, or at least as a backup option to Josh Jacobs for the Packers.

Green Bay drafted MarShawn Lloyd in the third round in April and also has second-year halfback Emanuel Wilson, but with Dillon sidelined, the Packers don’t really have any dependable options behind Jacobs. Plus, Jacobs had some injury issues last season.

Bringing in Hunt could end up paying major dividends for the squad.

We’ll see if the Green Bay Packers make a move to add Hunt before the start of the regular season.
