Green Bay Packers Named Top Fit For Former Dallas Cowboys Defender

The Green Bay Packers could still stand to improve their secondary depth, which is why safety is considered one of their biggest areas of need at the moment.

The Packers definitely addressed the safety position this offseason, signing Xavier McKinney in free agency and drafting Javon Bullard, but beyond those two, Green Bay has major question marks.

That’s why Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox has named the Packers as a top fit for free-agent safety Jayron Kearse.

Kearse spent the last three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he played in 16 games and registered 72 tackles, 1.5 sacks and an interception.

The 30-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Clemson, was originally selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Kearse spent the first four years of his career with the Vikings, primarily in a reserve role. His most productive campaign with the club came in 2018, when he totaled 32 tackles, a half of a sack and a pick.

Following his tenure in Minnesota, Kearse linked up with the Detroit Lions for one year in 2020, where he posted 59 stops and a forced fumble.

The Fort Myers, Fl. native then found a home in Dallas in 2021. He immediately became a starter for the Cowboys, finishing with 101 tackles, a sack, a couple of interceptions, a forced fumble and 10 passes defended in his debut season with the club.

Then, in 2022, Kearse recorded 77 tackles, a pair of sacks, a pick, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and five passes defended in what was another productive year.

Due to the marginalization of the safety position in the modern NFL, players like Kearse have gone by the wayside. However, there is no question that he should still be on a roster somewhere, and the Packers would absolutely have room for him.

The Green Bay Packers actually had a solid pass defense last season in spite of significant injuries to their secondary, ranking ninth in the league in passing yardage allowed. Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes comprise a rather impressive cornerback duo, and the addition of McKinney should surely help bolster the secondary as a whole.

Adding Kearse into the mix would then help the Packers guard against injury.
