    ( WTRF ) – How to keep veterans in mind this 4 th of July and a small town continues to rally together to discuss future of their beloved high school that recently closed.

    7News Anchor Annalise Murphy gathered this week’s top stories.

    Paden City residents want to remain ‘Wildcats’ despite shutdown

    A crowd of “Paden City Green” was at the Wetzel County Board of Education Meeting Monday night, where they were further discussing the future of Paden City High School.

    Wildcats far and wide brought their personal stories, concerns, and wishes to the board – urging them to stop the shutdown despite the EPA’s Superfund site designation.

    A main concern has been the identities of Paden City students and families, and if those will remain true to what they have known for the last 74 years.

    It was mentioned that PCHS seniors will still graduate with their green and white caps and gowns and have Paden City High School listed on their formal documents.

    The West Virginia state code allows a superintendent to temporarily shut down a school for health reasons.

    Local combat veteran talks about fireworks and PTSD ahead of Independence Day

    With Independence Day coming up this week, it’s important to keep combat veterans who might suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in mind.

    The loud noises and flashes of fireworks can trigger PTSD symptoms such as anxiety, isolation, nightmares or flashbacks, especially for veterans who were in combat.

    Joel Nicholson, President of the Nothern Panhandle Veterans Council says the best way to help veterans get through the holiday is to be compassionate and communicate.

    If you live next to a veteran, give them notice if you plan to set off fireworks so they can prepare.

    Countdown to the 7th Annual Back Home Festival in New Martinsville

    Nearly 15,000 people were in Wetzel County for the 7th Annual Back Home Festival this weekend!

    The three-day event has been voted the Best Festival in the State by West Virginia Living Magazine and featured over twenty local and national touring bands.

    People were able to enjoy air balloon rides for the very first time this year.

    Finally, this week, it’s not something you see every day, a fawn stuck in a storm sewer.

    The OR and W Fire District out of Shadyside, Ohio spent a morning this week rescuing a fawn after they were called by Janean Christy and her husband Lloyd, who also recorded the video of the rescue.

    OR & W Fire District Chief R.C. Fellows said the deer is fine and was released back into the woods.

    “Our crews are dedicated to rescuing animals and people alike,” Fellows said.
