Mel Gibson and his two youngest kids made a rare red carpet appearance on Tuesday for his new film, “Monster Summer.”
The “Braveheart” actor smiled for photographers as he kept his arms around his 14-year-old daughter, Lucia, and 7-year-old son, Lars, at the Directors Guild Of America in Los Angeles.
Gibson, 68, dressed up for the night out, sporting a navy blazer over a white button-down. He completed the look with blue jeans, black sneakers and a white pocket square.
Lucia looked all grown-up in a red strapless mini dress, gold strappy heels and a gold sparkly clutch.
Gibson is also father to seven children with his ex-wife, Robyn Moore: daughter Hannah, 43, and sons Christian, 42, Edward, 42, William, 38, Louie, 35, Milo, 33, and Thomas, 25.
The Oscar winner — who tends to keep his kids out of the limelight — has been easing his way into the spotlight over the last 20 years after several controversies.
Most recently, Gibson stepped out to support his friend and fellow actor Vince Vaughn while the latter accepted his Hollywood Walk of Fame Star on Aug. 12.
Prior to that, he’s been seen making more low-key appearances, including the photo call for his film “Father Stu” in April 2022 and the French Open in June 2021.
Gibson, who was one of the most sought-after actors of his time, was ousted from Hollywood as he faced a slew of controversies over the last three decades.
In 1991, Gibson came under fire when he made homophobic statements, telling the Spanish newspaper El País , “With this look, who’s going to think I’m gay? I don’t lend myself to that type of confusion. Do I look like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them?”
After years of defending his comments, he admitted he “shouldn’t have said” them in 1999.
In 2006, he made headlines once again when he was arrested for driving under the influence. It was then that he told a police officer, “F–king Jews … the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.”
He subsequently issued two apologies after his comments were made public, calling his behavior “despicable” that happened in a “moment of insanity.”
Gibson faced backlash once again in 2010 when transcripts of him going on misogynistic and racist rants to ex-girlfriend Oksana surfaced.
His actions caused the once-beloved actor to take a serious step back in Hollywood for nearly a decade.
