Her fourth-hour co-host, Jenna Bush Hager, was the second colleague she told.

But most of the broadcaster’s fellow staffers at 30 Rock learned of her decision this week , giving them only, “a couple of days to process this,” before she dropped the bombshell on Thursday’s broadcast.

“People were shocked. It’s still very shocking,” the source shared.

Kotb’s announcement comes as the show, which is often lauded as the top-rated morning news program, has seen a ratings surge in both total viewers and the coveted “key demo.”

The beloved “Today” anchor began her tearful announcement by explaining, “I do have some news. So, I was doing the math and I realized that I have spent 26 years at NBC.”

She continued, “I just turned 60 and it was such a monumental moment for me… because I started thinking about that decade. Like, ‘What does that decade mean? What does it hold? What it’s gonna have for me?”

“I decided this is the right time for me to kind of move on,” she shared.

An emotional Kotb described the decision as, “the hardest thing in the world,” but she’s not stepping down immediately.

“I’m not going to be here past the first of the year. I’m going stay in the NBC family, but it’s kind of a big deal for me,” she said.
