‘Very large’ bear found lying under deck in Pagosa Springs

DENVER (KDVR) — A 400-pound bear found lying under a deck by a family in Pagosa Springs was safely relocated to a remote area away from humans, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

According to CPW, the family went to sit on their back deck “and heard huffing and moaning” below them. The family was alarmed and called CPW.

CPW arrived and found a “very large bear.” They believe that this bear in particular has been commonly spotted in the area for several years and has a reputation for getting into non-natural food sources.

Two CPW officers decided to sedate the bear and relocate it, but that ended up being easier said than done.

“The sedation was successful, but getting the giant out from under the deck and into the bear trap for safe transport proved to be quite a challenge,” the agency said.

Officers estimated the bear was around 400 pounds and over 10 years old. Because of his size, several bystanders had to help get the bear out from under the deck.

After this was done, officers drove the bear out to a remote area ideal for bears and let him go . CPW said the hope is to give it the best chance at success in a place where it can find a lot of natural foods.
