Hunting the hunters
It’s hard to imagine, but once upon a time, mountain folks lived life in a frontier-like manner, living off the land and surviving by skill, determination, and the sweat of their brow. One of our most famous bluegrass ancestors, Daniel Boone, lived some of his life in such a way. According to history, he entered this part of the world to explore new territory and investigate the area’s wildlife. Although known more for his skills as a hunter and explorer, Mr. Boone is also known as a historic trapper as well.
Flat Gap woman arrested after suspected meth found in vehicle
A Johnson County woman was arrested Feb.11, after, police said, they found her in possession of 15 grams of suspected methamphetamine and various pills. Jackie L. Maynard, 50, of Bailey Road, Flat Gap, was charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (more than 2 grams of methamphetamine, first offense), second-degree possession of a controlled substance (drug unspecified), drug paraphernalia and various traffic offenses after an incident at the Shell gas station on Ky. 321 in Paintsville.
Local rep’s grant database bill approved unanimously by House
Legislation to establish a database for public grants, co-sponsored by Rep. Ashley Tackett Laferty, D-Martin, was approved unanimously by the state House on Feb. 8. House Bill 299, according to a statement, creates a plan to construct a centralized, searchable database which would collect public grant information and provide access for individuals and other entities to review available grant opportunities.

KSP: Floyd man stole vehicle from Johnson County church parking lot
A Floyd County man was arrested after, police said, he stole a vehicle from a church parking lot in Johnson County and driving it to a residence in Prestonsburg. According to an arrest citation, on Feb. 4, Kentucky State Police Trooper Tracy Salyer wrote that he was contacted by a deputy with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department in reference to a 2021 Buick Encore that had been stolen from the parking lot of the Rockhouse Church in Paintsville.
Lady Tigers escape Shelby Valley with win
ROBINSON CREEK — The fourth quarter was key for Paintsville Wednesday night. The Lady Tigers held a 45-43 lead entering the fourth quarter on the road at Shelby Valley. Paintsville took the win by outscoring the Lady Wildcats 15-9 in the final stanza to pull out a 60-52 win.
