For the first time since 2018, Richmond Community Schools has a finalist for Indiana Teacher of the Year.

Shelly Swain, a K-4 interventionist at Starr Elementary School, was named Teacher of the Year for RCS in May and was recently named by the Indiana Department of Education as a Top 10 finalist for the state award.

Swain's journey to finding her career as an educator was not a straight path, pursuing business at one point before finding her way back after communicating to a little girl through sign language after her interpreter had left for a little bit.

How and why did Swain learn sign language? Read the story to find out.

While I was out-of-town this weekend, I started coming down with an illness (no, not COVID), and didn't really feel like moving around much because of how bad it was.

This included my lack of appetite and inability to cook, resulting in my friend's family making the meal for me as seen above.

I will admit, I did not finish the meal, not because it wasn't good, but because of my loss of appetite over the weekend.

That being said, it was still delicious.

Thank you for taking the time to read through today's newsletter. I always appreciate any story tips you may have to better serve you and the city of Richmond. My email address is eweaver@gannett.com and you can follow me on X (@evan_weaver7).
