SWAT Team standoff in Cambridge City ends in apparent self-inflicted shooting

CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind. — The condition and identity of a man who allegedly shot himself in the head during a standoff with multiple agencies Tuesday is still unknown.

According to a Cambridge City Police Department news release, about 9:27 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a domestic dispute in the 200 block of North Lee Street.

Shortly after, the Richmond Police Department's SWAT Team was mobilized to the apartment complex, where both agencies were told the male had fired a gun into the apartment's ceiling during overnight hours.

Officers had also learned that the suspected male had outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants out of Fayette County.

After trying to make contact with the male through a closed door, officers heard a single gunshot, at which point RPD's SWAT team entered. Once inside, officers found the male with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The male was transported to Reid Health before being transferred to Miami Valley Hospital for a higher level of care, according to CCPD's release. No one else was injured.

“The well-being of our community is a top priority and an outcome like this is nothing short of a tragedy," CCPD Chief Richard Roberts said in the release. "We remain optimistic for this family and will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”

In an RPD press release, Chief Kyle Weatherly said, "I’m incredibly proud of our SWAT Team and negotiators for their dedication and professionalism during this high-risk incident. We are grateful that no members of the public were injured. We remain committed to working collaboratively with neighboring municipalities to ensure the safety of our communities.”
