40 roaches crawling on counter; rodent droppings on Twinkies and Oreo boxes: 3 South Florida restaurants shut

By Kari Barnett, South Florida Sun-Sentinel,

Bags of dry pasta with “gnaw marks,” almost 50 rodent droppings in a dry storage room “directly open to kitchen,” and about 40 roaches seen crawling on a counter were among the reasons the state temporarily closed three South Florida restaurants at the end of June.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel typically highlights restaurant and food truck inspections conducted by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation in Broward and Palm Beach counties. We cull through inspections that happen weekly and spotlight places ordered shut for “high-priority violations,” such as improper food temperatures or dead cockroaches.

Any business that fails this inspection must stay closed until it passes a follow-up. If you spotted a possible violation and wish to file a complaint, contact Florida DBPR . (But please don’t contact us: The Sun Sentinel doesn’t inspect restaurants.)

    BROWARD COUNTY

    Huey Magoo’s Chicken Tenders
    9216 Wiles Road, Coral Springs

Ordered shut: June 27; reopened June 27

Why: Two violations ( one high-priority ), including “approximately 10 live roaches on the floor and wall across from the mop sink in the kitchen.”

The inspection also found that an employee’s “cellphone was stored on the drying rack with drying utensils.”

The restaurant was allowed to reopen later that day when a follow-up inspection found no violations.

    Wilton Wings
1428 NE Fourth Ave., Fort Lauderdale

Ordered shut: June 25-26; reopened June 26

Why: 13 violations ( five high-priority ), including about 15 live flies buzzing around “on top shelf of cook line — next to loaves of bread,” “on cases of potatoes next to triple sink,” “at expo station on wall next to bottles of wine” and “by office door next to bag-in-box items.”

The state reported finding about 49 rodent droppings in the dry storage room that is “directly open to kitchen,” including on “shelving packaged items (spices, containers of pickles, cranberries and powdered sugar),” “on boxes of Twinkies and Oreos,” “on floor in corner next to door to restrooms” and “on top of dish machine.”

Also in dry storage, a stop sale was ordered on two 10-pound bags of dry pasta with “gnaw marks” sitting on a shelf.

There were temperature issues with the restaurant’s cooked ribs, deli turkey, hot dogs and cheese, and raw shell eggs were seen “stored over ready-to-eat vegetables” in a walk-in cooler.

Among maintenance issues mentioned in the report:

    • “accumulation of debris on exterior of ware-washing machine”
    • “floor soiled/has accumulation of debris,” including “under triple sink, around and under all cooking equipment, under all dry storage shelving”
    • “floor tiles missing and/or in disrepair” on the cookline
    • “interior of refrigerator or freezer in disrepair/has exposed insulation”

The restaurant was closed the next day as well after a follow-up visit but was allowed to reopen later that day after a third inspection found two intermediate and three basic violations.

    PALM BEACH COUNTY

    Panda Express
970 N. Congress Ave., Suite 100, Boynton Beach

Ordered shut: June 25; reopened June 26

Why: Three violations ( two high-priority ), including about 40 roaches seen “crawling on counter at food service display station” and “on wall in dining room at end of food service display station.”

The report also highlighted “approximately 10 live flies sitting on soda machine boxes in back kitchen,” as well as a dusty vent cover “over soy sauce and pineapple on shelf” over one-bay sink.

The restaurant was able to reopen after a next-day inspection found no violations.
