Newest Palm Beach County City Gets Strict With Sex Offenders

The newest city in Palm Beach County is getting more strict on where sex offenders can call home.

The Westlake City Council last night approved plans to make it so that offenders and sexual predators cannot live within 2,500 feet of places where children gather, including schools, parks, playgrounds and community centers. This is stricter than the state law requiring a distance of 1,000 feet.

The move is designed to protect the youngest residents of the county's fastest-growing city.

The city was incorporated in 2016 and it's only around 6 square miles in size, which leaves virtually nowhere for sex offenders to live.

The FDLE database shows two live together in the city, but they will not be required to move. The one offender and one predator actually live together and will be "grandfathered" in.
