TAMPA — Wellington High quarterback Keelin Coleman turned in another typical stellar performance on Friday night in a Class 2A flag football state semifinal game.

The senior signal caller, who will join the Thomas University flag football team in Georgia next season, completed 19 of 28 passes for 259 yards. But the Wolverines (15-4) still couldn’t find the end zone.

Ruskin Lennard (19-3) held on for a 7-0 victory at One Buccaneer Place. Senior Kate Keith scored the game’s lone touchdown on a 17-yard pass from junior quarterback Abby Elwell.

The Wolverines marched inside the Longhorns’ 10-yard line twice in the first half without coming away with any points. They were also in Longhorn territory three more times in the second half.

“They are a great defensive team,” Wellington head coach Robert Callovi said, right after hugging his young son, Camden, following the game. “They made some great stands. We just couldn’t put it in there against them.”

Elwell paced Lennard by completing 19 of 26 passes for 192 yards.

The Wolverines earned their berth in the state final four by virtue of winning the first flag football region championship in the school’s history with a 12-7 victory over Fort Pierce Central (19-2). Central’s only two losses of the season were to Wellington.

“It was a great year for us,” Callovi said. “We accomplished things our program never has before. Just being here was a great experience.

I’m really proud. I had a special group this year.”

Coleman was in the midst of many tearful goodbyes when she looked back on her four years as a Wolverine.

“I’m incredibly proud of this team,” Coleman said. “We have come so far. We made school history. I’m proud of our coaches, the receivers, the defense, I am just super proud of them all.”

Wellington outscored its opponents 434-112 in 2024.

The victory puts the Longhorns in the Class 2A state championship game. Lennard will face Miami Palmetto High. The Class 2A title tilt is slated for Saturday at 6 p.m.
