Road near Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach reopens for first time since Secret Service closure

South Ocean Boulevard near former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club reopened Thursday for traffic for the first time since the U.S. Secret Service ordered it to close on July 20 , the town of Palm Beach said in an alert.

It marks the first time the barricades were removed since the town, Secret Service and Mar-a-Lago Club reached an agreement , announced Monday, to open the road when Trump is not home.

The Republican nominee for president left Palm Beach on Thursday morning for a campaign event in Sierra Vista, Arizona.

Bridge openings also will revert to their usual schedule for the three spans that connect Palm Beach to the mainland, the town said.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced Aug. 16 that it was implementing temporary security zones around Mar-a-Lago, and changes to when the bridges to Palm Beach open went into effect at 8 p.m. Aug. 19, all part of the increased security measures the federal government has put into place around Mar-a-Lago since the July 13 attempted assassination of Trump.

It's unclear when Trump is expected to return. The road would close again at that time.

Why did South Ocean Boulevard close?

The Secret Service on July 18 told Palm Beach that it was closing South Ocean Boulevard for Trump's protection. The closure took effect July 20 and extended from the Southern Boulevard traffic circle next to Mar-a-Lago north to the intersection with South County Road.

When the road is closed, residents in the affected area can access their homes only through the north security checkpoint at South County Road. The area is closed to pedestrians and cyclists, and only emergency vehicles can pass through the checkpoint at Southern Boulevard.

The road originally was expected to remain closed around-the-clock every day through at least the Nov. 5 general election.

The Secret Service increased security around everyone it protects following the July 13 incident, an agency spokeswoman told the Daily News.

    What happens next?

It's unclear exactly how long Trump must be gone for the barricades to be removed and the road to reopen.

For example, Trump left Palm Beach for several hours Wednesday to go to North Carolina for a campaign rally, but he returned later in the day to Mar-a-Lago, and the closure remained in effect while he was gone.

The road's reopening indicates the Republican nominee for president will be out of town for at least two days, a source confirmed.
