Who is Drew Brooks? Tyreek Hill called Miami Dolphins head of security during detainment

The news of star receiver Tyreek Hill being detained Sunday shocked NFL fans getting ready for the Miami Dolphins ' season-opening game. Among the confusion: Who was Hill calling for help?

"Hey, Drew, I'm getting arrested!" Hill can be heard shouting in police bodycam video . "I'm getting arrested, Drew!"

Many people watching the video thought Hill was on the phone with his agent, Drew Rosenhaus . But he was actually reaching out to Drew Brooks, the Dolphins' director of team security .

Hill was forcibly removed from his car with what was reported as a reckless driving violation. Police forced him to the ground and placed HIll in handcuffs, then later put him in a chokehold to force him to sit on the curb. When teammate Jonnu Smith approached, Hill again asked him to "call Drew, call Drew."

Hill was cited with two tickets and released before the game. He would play against the Jacksonville Jaguars , recording seven catches for 130 yards and an 80-yard touchdown.

Rosenhaus said Brooks was among those on the scene after Hill and another teammate, Calais Campbell, were detained by police. Here's what to know about Brooks and his role with the team:

Drew Brooks is the head of team security for the Dolphins. He spent 20 years as an officer for the Pembroke Pines Police Department .

During games, his primary duty is sticking by coach Mike McDaniel. He serves as McDaniel's "get-back coach," meaning he keeps the head coach from wandering onto the field and interfering with officials on the sideline.

During the Dolphins' game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Germany last season, quarterback Patrick Mahomes took out Brooks on the sideline after running out of bounds. Brooks said he tore his triceps after the collision.

Drew Brooks' son died of brain cancer

During a segment on HBO's "Hard Knocks" last season, Brooks talked about the death of his young son, Dylan, after he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an inoperable form of brain cancer. The tumor was discovered in 2012, and Dylan died within a year.

“During the time this was going on, my escape was football,” Brooks said. “When you're dealing with something as stressful as cancer in general, let alone your own son, my escape was football and to get that escape kept me going, to be honest with you. So just to have three hours a week with the team, to get that escape got me through a lot of days and still does.”

Brooks said fewer than half of the people in the organization knew he had lost a son.

"It's not something that I talk about a lot, but at times people need to hear it just to interject that perspective because tomorrow's not promised. You don't know, so don't waste that day."
