Tua Tagovailoa's latest concussion has the football world asking: Should he retire ?

The Miami Dolphins quarterback went down hard after a hit by the Buffalo Bills' Damar Hamlin during the third quarter of Thursday night's game . Tagovailoa's arms froze in the air in what neurologists refer to as the "fencing response," a sign of head trauma. He was able to walk off the field and did not return to the game.

This makes the third registered concussion in Tagovailoa's five-year NFL career. In 2022, he also exhibited the fencing response during a Thursday Night Football game in Cincinnati, which came four days after he stumbled after a hit that wasn't diagnosed as a concussion. He missed two games, then later that season he suffered another concussion that kept him out for the final two regular-season games and the Dolphins' playoff game.

Now fans, current and former players and analysts have begun to ask whether Tagovailoa should prioritize his health and retire from football . A series of head injuries has prematurely ended several NFL careers, including Hall of Fame Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman. Star Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck also retired early because of the fear of lingering health issues from sustained brain trauma. Tagovailoa himself said previously that he considered retirement after the 2022 season.

That said, it's easy to play armchair doctor and administer medical advice that outside observers aren't qualified to give. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said "it would be so wrong for me to even sniff" the subject of Tagovailoa retiring. There are still tests to run, and time will tell whether and when he is healthy enough to play again.

“You’re talking about his career,” McDaniel said. “His career is his.”

If you were in Tua's place, what would you do? Call it a career? Try to keep playing? Or are you not totally sure? Let us know by voting in the poll below.
