Coverage of 'Tyreek Hill incident' shows versatility, veteran work ethic of Post sports staff

Our reporters and photographers are called upon to cover all manner of topics and issues that are not in their area of expertise. That's the situation Palm Beach Post Miami Dolphins /NFL reporters Joe Schad and Hal Habib found themselves in last week with coverage of star Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill's controversial detainment by Miami-Dade police.

From the moment we heard about the " Tyreek Hill police incident " on Sunday morning, the Post Sports staff — led by Schad and Habib — was all over the story as it quickly blew up both locally and nationally. Hill, a bonafide NFL superstar, is no stranger to controversy so our team reacted accordingly with all due speed.

Indeed, Schad had a breaking news story posted within 30 minutes of getting word of the incident — and confirming that it was true — involving Hill and Miami-Dade police outside Hard Rock Stadium. We continued covering the unfolding story throughout game day, and into the following week, including continuing news stories, columns, and reaction from teammates and coaches. Stepping out of their comfort zone, the reporters followed up with the primary officer involved being put on administrative leave, and even the Dolphins head of security whose name Hill kept mentioning as he was being pulled from his car, thrown on the ground and handcuffed .

And yes, they got the whole police body cam video so that our digital readers could view the incident and judge for themselves how things went down.

The Post's veteran sports columnist, Tom D'Angelo , wrote from his unique perspective as one of only a couple of U.S. sports journalists who was present at two of the strangest police-athlete confrontations of 2024: the arrest of pro golfer Scottie Scheffler at the PGA Championship and Hill's police incident on Sunday. Habib wrote an additional column admonishing the police union for its quick statement supporting the officers involved that did not match what we all watched on the body cam video. (The Post published both a short and long version of that video soon after the police released it to the media: a short version on the key moment, and the complete version of the incident from the moment the police clocked Hill speeding.)

Schad, Habib, D'Angelo, Post Deputy Sports Editor Eric Wallace and USA Today - Florida Sports Trending Reporter Dan Rorabaugh produced 20 stories on Hill by Thursday morning. And oh yeah, they also covered the game.

By Thursday, Schad and Habib were back on the NFL beat as the Dolphins prepared to play the Buffalo Bills that night at Hard Rock Stadium. They'll also keep an eye out for further developments in the Hill case.

Meanwhile, please check out more of our staff's work from the past week below. I hope you enjoy and continue to support local journalism.
