New Miami Dolphins QB Tyler Huntley made Pro Bowl? How in the world did that ever happen?

MIAMI GARDENS — In a stunning series of events, the Miami Dolphins obtained a Pro Bowl quarterback on Monday to help fill the void while Tua Tagovailoa is out with a concussion.

In an even more stunning series of events, Tyler Huntley can call himself a Pro Bowl quarterback .

Nothing against Tyler Huntley . We haven’t even met him yet. He's probably a fine young man.

    But a Pro Bowl quarterback?

Huntley has thrown eight touchdown passes. Not this season. In his four-year career.

Huntley does have more touchdown passes than interceptions. He has thrown seven of those.

Huntley also had a respectable 99.3 passer rating last year. It was the highest of his career by more than 20 points.

So how’s he a “Pro Bowl quarterback” (even with quotation marks around the words)?

It goes back two seasons, when Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen pulled out of the Pro Bowl. Huntley appeared in only six games for the Baltimore Ravens that year, primarily when Lamar Jackson was injured, throwing for 658 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions with a 2-2 record.

If you’re still wondering how that makes him Pro Bowl worthy, chalk it up to some serious ballot-stuffing on the part of fans. That’s the only logical explanation, because ESPN determined that Huntley had just 275 passing yards and no TDs when voting for the Pro Bowl closed for the 2022 season. Yet he had enough support to qualify as the fourth alternate. Much to the chagrin of Steve Kornacki.

Thus, if you’re putting together a list of Pro Bowl Dolphins quarterbacks, you’re now morally and legally bound to list Dan Marino, Bob Griese, Earl Morrall, Tua Tagovailoa … and Tyler “Snoop” Huntley.

When the news broke that Huntley had received the Pro Bowl designation, media members howled. The most prophetic response may have been from Nathan Jahnke of Pro Football Focus. His tweet:

“An incomplete list of quarterbacks that should have made the Pro Bowl over Tyler Huntley:

    Mitchell Trubisky

    Teddy Bridgewater

    Bailey Zappe

    Joshua Dobbs

    Jarrett Stidham

    Mike White

    Sam Ehlinger

    Skylar Thompson
