Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) put on injured reserve: Miami Dolphins QB out at least 4 games

MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins are placing quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve, forcing him to miss a minimum of four games while recovering from a concussion, a league source confirmed Tuesday.

Coach Mike McDaniel had said Monday , in his most recent meeting with reporters, that he and general manager Chris Grier would discuss the possibility in the coming days after obtaining additional medical results on Tagovailoa. Those tests obviously showed that Tagovailoa needs time to recover.

“Not enough information quite yet," McDaniel had said. "That’s going to be driven by medical experts."

Tagovailoa was injured while scrambling for a first down in the second half of Thursday night’s 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills . He also suffered at least two concussions during the 2022 season .

WHAT IF? Would wearing a Guardian cap have prevented latest concussion for Dolphins QB?

Given Tagovailoa's injury history, there was speculation he might consider retirement , which he has done in the past. But NFL Network reported that he does plan on resuming his career when able. McDaniel would not comment on that.

"I think it’s of utmost priority of mind for Tua to speak on Tua’s career," McDaniel said.

The Dolphins’ next four games are at Seattle, vs. Tennessee, at New England and at Indianapolis. The Dolphins’ bye week falls between the Patriots and Titans games, giving Tagovailoa an extra week to heal.

The first game in which he would be eligible is Oct. 27 vs. Arizona, followed by a trip to Buffalo.

Skylar Thompson becomes the Dolphins’ starting quarterback in Tagovailoa’s absence.

"I think all his teammates can feel his command and his growth, and I think he put together some winning football as a rookie," McDaniel said of Thompson.

The Dolphins also signed Tyler Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad and have practice squad player Tim Boyle to back up Thompson. In confirming the Tagovailoa move Tuesday afternoon, the Dolphins made the addition of Huntley official and also announced the signing of tackle Jackson Carman to the practice squad. Receiver Robbie Chosen was released from the practice squad.
