MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel met with reporters Thursday, with many questions surrounding the team's quarterback role (Skylar Thompson, Tyler Huntley or Tim Boyle).

    • On the starting QB for Monday night vs. Tennessee : "I have in my mind how I think it could play out. However it's a bit premature for a multitude of reasons." They include a competitive reason. Adds, "Still a lot of information to gather."
    • On Thompson: It's a rib injury. "Pretty painful. It's not just a pain-tolerance thing. It's how you're able to do your job and with what effectiveness?" Thompson will practice today, but how much is TBA.
    • On Huntley's grasp of the offense: "I'm feeling much more knowledgeable on exactly where he's at." Says "I can see him gain the confidence of his teammates. ... The game isn't too big for him."
    • LT Terron Armstead is "feeling better, in the protocol." Same with CB Kendall Fuller.
    • LB David Long won't practice today.
    • Rookie OT Patrick Paul and how ready he is to start: "I'm feeling good about his readiness and ability to play NFL football."
    • Regarding Huntley and whether he has been here long enough to start, a comparison was made to when McDaniel was on the 49ers’ staff in 2017. The Niners traded for QB Jimmy Garoppolo, sending New England a second-round pick, on Oct. 31. The 49ers started Garoppolo on Dec. 12 in Chicago. San Francisco won 15-14 as Garoppolo completed 26 of 37 passes for 293 yards with no TDs and one interception. That was the start of a season-ending five-game winning streak for the 49ers. Garoppolo had at least 300 passing yards against Houston and Tennessee in the two games after the Bears. McDaniel: "To win football games like Jimmy did, your team has to believe in you. Well, where does that come from? Well, It's not all the reps that we've had throughout training camp. We weren't there with them. There's an unspoken confidence and conviction that a person has to have where guys believe that regardless of how long they've played with them, that they have the components to do what each and every one of them need him to do really."
