Miami Dolphins' Tyreek Hill: I've matured beyond demanding the football

MIAMI GARDENS — Tyreek Hill has experienced a 34 percent drop in targets from a year ago, and his receptions are down 48 percent, his yardage down 53 percent and his touchdowns down 75 percent.

But, he says, you won’t find him on the Miami Dolphins ’ sideline complaining.

“I’ve got out of that,” Hill said Thursday. “I’ve grown through that stage of my life. I’ve been talking to my therapist and she said, ‘Don’t get into arguments on the sideline.’ So I’ve let it go. I’ve let that side of me go, of demanding the ball.”

Hill is the Dolphins’ two-time MVP and reigning No. 1 player in the league, according to a poll of his peers. But amid the Dolphins’ 1-2 start, he has had 23 targets, 13 receptions, 194 yards and one touchdown. Of course, the concussion suffered by starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who is on injured reserve, has plenty to do with that.

The Dolphins are headed toward a Monday night meeting with the Tennessee Titans amid uncertainty — at least on the outside — over whether their starting quarterback will be Tyler Huntley, Skylar Thompson or Tim Boyle. Whoever it is will want to get the ball to both Hill and his opposite number at wide receiver, Jaylen Waddle, who has 13 receptions for 176 yards.

“Our job is to be a good teammate,” Hill said. “As frustrating as it is as a player — because it can get tough for both of us because we’re so used to being such big game changers and stuff like that — it’s tough. But at the end of the day we’ve got to understand that we have great players on this team who can make players and whenever plays come, we’ve got to make our plays.”
