Miami Dolphins' Odell Beckham looks like himself in practice, says WR coach Wes Welker

MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has looked impressive, according to wide receivers coach Wes Welker .

Beckham has returned from a knee injury this week and is eligible to play at the Patriots on Sunday.

"Odell's looked great," Welker said Thursday. "You know, just in some of the routes on air and different things like that. He looks like the Odell that we've seen. We're getting him out there, getting him moving around, chemistry with all of the guys in the room. And with the quarterbacks. And just continue to work the process."

Beckham missed Miami's first four games on the physically unable to perform list.

Beckham, 31, has topped 1,000 yards receiving five times, most recently in 2019.

Is Odell Beckham Jr. the answer to Dolphins' offensive woes?

The Dolphins are in need of a third receiver to complement Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. And it's encouraging that OBJ was a full participant in Wednesday's walkthrough.

"We have a lot of receivers and we've had a lot of injuries, too, and everything else, but you know when you can add a player of Odell's caliber it can open up the offense," Welker said. "We'll see how that kind of pans out and kind of go through practice and kind of talk about as a staff and and figure out the best-case scenario for for our team."

Hill and Waddle each have 17 catches through four games.

Robbie Chosen, Grant DuBose, D'Wayne Eskridge and Malik Washington are tied for third among Dolphins receivers with one catch each.

Wes Welker on Tyreek Hill's emotional outburst

Miami's passing offense has struggled, particularly without injured Tua Tagovailoa.

Hill is averaging only 54 yards per game. And he was seen shouting on the Dolphins sideline during Miami's most recent loss .

Hill said he was trying to inspire teammates.

Welker didn't have an issue with what he saw and heard.

"I think it's an emotional game and I think there's emotional players," Welker said. "I mean, I don't know if you've seen, but Tom Brady used to have outbursts like that, you know, all the time in trying to lead the team and put us in a positive direction. or whatever it is."

Welker was nearby and did not seem distraught at the time.

"If I look disinterested, it's more the fact of, you know, letting players be players and letting leaders be leaders and you know it's it's their team not ours," Welker said. "What needs to be done and what needs to be said, you know, needs to be done and said."
