Highway 74 was closed south of Palm Desert on Sunday afternoon because of a traffic crash that resulted in two vehicles needing to be towed away, according to California Highway Patrol's incident log.

The log stated that the crash was reported at around 2:45 p.m. No one was injured in the crash but drivers were being held at the bottom of the mountain while responders dealt with the cleanup and worked to get the vehicles towed.

The crash occurred as a thunderstorm was moving through the area that brought rain, lightning and hail to Palm Desert and the Santa Rosa Mountains to the south. It was unclear if it had been raining or hailing at the time of the crash. The log also stated that hail on the roadway made travel hazardous.

As of an update posted to the log at 5:09 p.m., a tow truck was still trying to get to at least one of the vehicles.

    This is a developing story.
