The National Weather Service says the Coachella Valley's current heatwave that's hitting on a long holiday weekend could be a historic one, with the valley potentially to see 11 straight days with temperatures of 115 degrees or higher. That would break the old record of nine days of temperatures of at least 115 degrees set in 2021.

The all-time record high for Palm Springs is 123 degrees, recorded on June 17, 2021. Weather service models show there's a 14% of marching that record on Friday. The chances increase on Saturday, with a 20% chance of breaking the 123-degree record. The probability of an all-time record high on Saturday is 8%.

While the desert might not set an all-time record, chances are better that daily records will be broken. Weather service models indicate chances of daily records as: 69% on Friday, 78% on Saturday and 55% on Monday.

Looking to escape the heat with a short road trip? You'll be hard-pressed to find real relief on a tank of gas.

Joshua Tree National Park officials are warning holiday visitors and hikers to take extra precautions due to high temperatures, extreme ultraviolet rays and the potential for harsh exposure.

Daytime highs in the park are forecast for between 106 degrees and 108 degrees for the rest of the week and into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Some tips for staying safe in park during the summer:

    • Bring extra food and water.
    • Consider going on shorter hikes.
    • Hiking in the middle of the day, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. when it’s the hottest, is not recommended.

“We ask that park visitors consider taking advantage of shorter trails closer to sunrise and sunset, stargazing under the dark night sky, and visiting the park’s visitor centers and exhibits,” said Anna Marini, coordinator for the Joshua Tree Preventative Search and Rescue, a volunteer team that specializes in visitor education.
