As temperatures in parts of Riverside County continue to soar to record-setting triple digits, excessive heat warnings will remain in place through at least Thursday in some areas, National Weather Service forecasters said Sunday.

The warning through at least 9 p.m. Thursday includes the Coachella Valley, as well as the Apple and Lucerne valleys and the San Gorgonio Pass Near Banning.

Another warning remains until at least 9 p.m. Sunday for the Riverside County mountains, Riverside County valleys and the Inland Empire.

Sunday’s high was expected to reach 116 in Coachella and 118 in Indio and Palm Desert.

Record temperatures in Big Bear, Borrego on Saturday

On Saturday, Palm Springs reached 117 degrees, one day after the city set an all-time record with a high of 124 degrees . While the city didn't set a daily record on Saturday, a few area towns did:

    • Big Bear tied a daily record at 92 degrees on Saturday, matching a daily record set in 1985
    • Borrego set a new record at 118 degrees, besting the previous daily record of 115 degrees recorded in 2017.

Temperatures may drop a degree or two by Monday afternoon from the coastal valleys to the mountains, the NWS said.

Forecasters warned residents to limit long periods of time outdoors, drink plenty of fluids, and to check on those susceptible to the heat.

Authorities reminded the public to never leave pets or children inside vehicles on days that are even a little warmer than normal, as locked cars can turn into death traps in mere minutes.

Air quality alert in effect for Coachella Valley, Riverside, Moreno Valley

An air quality alert was set for the Inland Empire including the cities of Riverside, Moreno Valley, Corona, Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Coachella and Palm Desert, which will be in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The NWS recommends the following steps to minimize ozone air pollution levels:

    • Limit the use of gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment until evening hours.
    • Conserve electricity and set your air conditioner at a higher temperature.
    • Try to delay trips to the gas station and the use of household chemicals until the evening.

Wind-blown dust advisory for Coachella Valley

Air quality regulators issued a windblown dust advisory from 4 p.m. Sunday through 8 a.m. Tuesday in the Coachella Valley and eastern Riverside County, where high winds may result in unhealthy conditions for sensitive groups.
