More pickleball courts could be coming to Palm Springs. Next week, the city council will consider a proposal to double the number of courts at DeMuth Park.

Costing an estimated $6 million, the pickleball court expansion would see 12 additional pickleball courts built at the eastern end of the park, bringing the total number of courts to 24. City plans for the expansion show additional improvements to the pickleball area of DeMuth Park, including additional bleacher seating and shade structures.

A "tournament court" with stadium seating is also planned to be constructed.

The project is estimated to cost around $6 million, with funding coming from the Measure J sales tax measure and residential construction fees.

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in America, according to a 2023 report by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, a trade group which represents a variety of sporting goods and fitness brands. The sport has proven popular in Palm Springs, where its accessibility has taken hold.

Earlier this year, the Kimpton Rowan Hotel opened six pickleball courts in the pit in front of the Palm Springs Art Museum which can be used by the public.

A 2022 survey revealed some of the city's most ardent pickleball players want additional places to play in the city. Respondents described tense competition to secure one of the 12 courts at DeMuth Park, with some conflicts resulting from people refusing to stop playing.

There is no timeline for construction or completion of the project. It is contingent upon approval by the council and is scheduled to be discussed at its July 25 meeting. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Council Chambers located at 3200 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way.
