Brunch spot Broken Yolk back in Palm Springs with eggs, waffles and whimsical cocktails

A Palm Springs brunch spot from yesteryear is back in some new digs.

Palm Springs’ first branch of the Broken Yolk Cafe chain opened in a space just north of The Village bar on Palm Canyon Drive in February 2017 . The restaurant operated for several years before closing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

No reason appears to have been given for the closure, with the last update on the restaurant’s Facebook page for years remaining a March 2020 post saying it was temporarily closing amid the pandemic. But that changed earlier this summer, when a post appeared promising Broken Yolk was coming back.

That promise was fulfilled with Monday's opening of its new location on the second floor of the two-story building at 155 South Palm Canyon Drive.

That space, above Maracas Mexican Cantina and the Jus Chillin ice cream shop, was most recently the home of the Brickworks Bistro pizza spot and its predecessor, Matchbox. That space, which is connected to the Wilma and Frieda’s restaurant via a bridgeway, boasts a large patio overlooking the plaza below as well as seating that looks out over Palm Canyon Drive.

Founded in 1979 in San Diego’s Pacific Beach, the Broken Yolk chain now consists of about 40 restaurants. Among them is a La Quinta location at Washington Street and Highway 111 that dates back to 2014.

The breakfast menu consists of a variety of typical morning fare, including omelets, skillets, pancakes, crepes and benedicts. There are also specialty items such as the chicken and waffles and steak and eggs, plus a selection of Mexican dishes that includes breakfast burritos, chilaquiles and machaca (an egg scramble with shredded beef and veggies). The “Healthy Side Up” menu, meanwhile, includes avocado toast and an Acai bowl.

The cafe is open until 2 p.m. and also serves a smaller lunch menu with burgers, wraps, sandwiches and salads. The lengthy drink menu includes a “mimosa flight,” six types of bloody marys and a Cinnamon Toast Crunch-inspired cocktail, along with typical breakfast beverages such as coffee drinks and juice.

The restaurant’s former space down the street, meanwhile, has been home to the Mexican restaurant, Sol Agave , since last year.
