A man from Desert Hot Springs died following a shooting at a parking structure in downtown Palm Springs on Friday night, with police arresting three suspects within a few hours.

The Palm Springs Police Department responded around 10:30 p.m. Friday to a report from Desert Regional Medical Center regarding a person who was allegedly shot at a downtown parking structure. After interviewing the victim's friends who brought him to the hospital, officers went to the structure on the 200 block of South Indian Canyon Drive, where they gathered information and identified a possible suspect, a 20-year-old from Palm Springs.

“Officers and detectives conducted surveillance at a related address and observed Maciel leaving the location with two other unidentified males in a vehicle,” the department said on social media Saturday.

The officers conducted a traffic stop, at which point the 20-year-old tried to escape on foot, prompting police to deploy a K9 unit. Along with the 20-year-old, they also apprehended two other 23-year-old suspects, both from Cathedral City.

“Further investigation revealed that this incident stemmed from an attempted robbery,” the department said.

The shooting victim was identified Saturday by the coroner’s office as Adam Ortega, a 31-year-old from Desert Hot Springs. His time of injury was reported as 10:15 p.m. Friday, and he was pronounced dead early Saturday.

All three of the suspects were booked on murder and attempted robbery charges, while Maciel was also facing a charge of felony assault with a deadly weapon. They were being held at the Larsen Justice Center in Indio, with individual bails set at $1 million, according to jail records.

Palm Springs police detectives are investigating the incident. Anyone who was a witness or has information about this shooting is asked to contact Detective Escallada at 760-323-8129. Anonymous information can also be provided to Crime Stoppers at 760-341-7867.
