A brush fire broke out in Palmdale and quickly grew to about 300 acres in size on Friday afternoon, officials said.

The fire, which authorities labeled the Deer Fire, was first reported about 3 p.m. in the area of Avenue Q and 35th Street, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters promptly declared a second-alarm response.

It was last reported at 300 acres, according to CAL FIRE.

Palmdale city officials initially warned that the fire had the potential to reach 500 acres within an hour.

But the smoke appeared to have largely subsided by 3:30 p.m. as firefighters poured water on the flames.

Forward progress of the wildfire was reportedly declared stopped just after 5 p.m.
