Moment motorist jumps into Florida lake to evade police during 90 mph chase after taking test drive too far

A woman who allegedly stole a new car during a test drive and led police through a 90 mph chase attempted to make her grand getaway by diving into a Florida lake, wild new video shows.

Dashcam footage released Tuesday by the Florida Highway Patrol shows officers chasing behind Melina Logan, 27, who is accused of stealing a new 2024 Honda Civic from a car dealership in Palmetto Bay on May 9, Fox 35 reports .

Logan, of North Carolina, allegedly waited for the salesperson to exit the vehicle during a test drive when she drove off in the car at around 1:42 p.m., triggering a police chase on State Road 826, officials said.

Logan could be seen in the dash cam video driving recklessly in heavy traffic, with speeds reaching up to 90 mph as she squeezed the vehicle through the paved shoulder to try and dodge the traffic.

While the stolen car appeared to nearly escape the officers’ field of vision, the chase came to an abrupt end when Logan collided with three other vehicles as she approached bumper-to-bumper traffic near an exit ramp near Doral, CBS News reports.

The crash left the driver’s side door inoperable, leading Logan to jump out of the car through the passenger side door, which was pinned against the concrete barrier.

As state troopers ran to her and warned her to stop, Logan jumped over the barrier and dove into the lake below.

Officers worked quickly to throw safety ropes to help Logan out of the water, but she allegedly refused to cooperate, leading police to jump in after her.

Officials said Logan scratched a Miami-Dade officer trying to get her back on land, and she also allegedly pushed a local Doral officer underwater.

Logan was topless when she was pulled out of the water, Local 10 reports.

She was eventually taken to a medical center and later booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

She faces several charges, including grand theft of a vehicle, two counts of battery on a police officer, fleeing and eluding police, leaving the scene of a crash and resisting an officer.

Police noted that one person whom Logan crashed into at the end of the chase was left injured and hospitalized.
