BAY COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – Experts anticipated the 4th of July holiday week to set records for the number of people traveling. They also said the demand for more gasoline has caused prices to spike, especially here in Florida.

“I was baffled. I miss paying what I used to pay,” Panama City local Colton Shadoan said.

Last Sunday’s state average for gas prices was $3.38. As of Friday, the state average is now $3.53, a 15-cent increase in less than a week. Travelers said they’re hoping to get a break soon.

“I went to Gainesville on Monday. I stopped one time for gas, and it was expensive. It was $3.69. It was ridiculous,” Shadoan said.

Some people don’t have high hopes.

“I would love to see [gas prices drop], but I don’t think they will. You’ve got too many politicians putting money in their pockets,” Panama City Beach local James Schilling said.

Motorists said high gas prices make saving money a challenge.

“It’s harder to save up now because I have to pay so much for gas, the same thing with bills and insurance going up as well,” Shadoan said.

“I have to pay rent. I have to eat. I have a drink every now and then, so that’s why I’m trying to save money,” Schilling said.

There are ways you can save at the pump. AAA experts suggest combining errands to limit driving time. Also, shop around for the best local gas prices. Remove excess weight from your vehicle, don’t use your trunk as a closet, and drive conservatively.

Even though gas prices are high, Panama City and the rest of the Panhandle still have the lowest prices in the state.
