Yet another recall has been issued by the FDA in a long line of Listeria monocytogenes outbreaks. Stutz Packing Company of Indio, California is voluntarily recalling its 1-pound packages of Shelled Walnuts due to a potential contamination with the dangerous organism. The recall is of the Highest Risk Warning issued by the FDA, and was officially announced on July 19, 2024.

According to officials, a Class 1 recall is only issued when there is a “reasonable probability” that the use of or exposure to a product could “cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” Listeria is as dangerous as it gets when it comes to food contamination. It can lead to serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and those with weakened immune systems.

Lot codes 24171-1 and 24172-1 have been identified as being included in the recall, both of which were distributed in Arizona and Texas exclusively, with 2,538 cases in total being named. The product is sold in clear plastic packaging and features a red-outlined white box printed in the center of each 1-pound bag.

A recall notice was issued on July 22 noting the nature of the recall and detailing the company’s next steps.

"The recall was the result of routine sampling which revealed that the finished products contained the bacteria. Stutz has ceased the production and distribution of this product as FDA and Stutz continue their investigation. No other sizes, varieties, or other packaging of Shelled Walnuts are included in this recall."

Foodborne illnesses are capable of causing severe health issues including vomiting, diarrhea, fever and even brain and blood infections in the most severe of cases. Anyone who has purchased the product in question should either throw it away or return it immediately. Those with further questions and details on the recall can reach out to Sasha Morales via email at smorales@stutzpacking.com , or by calling 760-230-9547 from Monday-Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PST.
