Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are a favorite treat in my household, but we've been trying to cut out junk food. Still, when that chocolate and peanut butter craving hits, it's almost too much to ignore! Considering that, you can imagine my excitement when a DIY chocolate peanut butter cup popped up in my Instagram feed.

Content creator @momlifewithlaura shared this recipe on her Instagram account and it was so simple I knew I had to give it a try. It only called for three ingredients— chocolate, peanut butter and powdered sugar.

What Happened When I Made Peanut Butter Cups at Home

I love dark chocolate so I chose to make my chocolate peanut butter cups with that instead of milk chocolate. I also used all-natural peanut butter so it was smoother and less sweet. Laura says to use one cup of melted chocolate, a half cup of peanut butter, and three tablespoons of powdered sugar. I cut the sugar down and only used one tablespoon because I like my peanut butter to be a little softer and not too sweet.

To make these, you line a muffin tin with cupcake liners and then melt the chocolate. I did mine in the microwave, using my ceramic measuring cup as the microwave-safe dish. While the chocolate wafers were in the microwave, I mixed up the peanut butter filling.

Once the chocolate was melted and didn't have any hard lumps, I poured a layer into the cupcake liners. Then, I dropped a teaspoon of the peanut butter mixture on top of the chocolate and then added more chocolate to cover it, like a Reese's Cup. My chocolate looked a little uneven, so I used a plastic fork to swirl it evenly over the peanut butter.

Once I had them put together, I popped them in the refrigerator for two hours. This recipe made six large chocolate peanut butter cups.

Because I made my peanut butter softer than Laura's filling, mine was still a little runny when I bit into it. If you don't like that, you can always make the peanut butter filling firmer by stirring in more powdered sugar, or you can freeze the cups.

Overall, my family really liked these homemade chocolate peanut butter cups and I liked that it took me less than 10 minutes to assemble. I also liked that they have less sugar than store-bought candy and I could customize them to my tastes. My favorite part, though, was how huge these were! It was like eating two Reese's Cups in one! I'll definitely be making these again.
