Jelly Roll has long been transparent about sharing the details of his life journey , and recently, he opened up about hitting what he personally felt was "rock bottom."

In the past, the rapper-turned-country crooner, born Jason DeFord , has been an open book, speaking publicly about his battle with substance abuse, his time spent in and out of jail, and his rough childhood into adulthood.

The "Wild Ones" singer's path to success has inspired many. Although he's in a much better place now, he spoke with The New York Times about some of his "rock-bottom experiences," which include heroin use and a myriad of other troubling personal circumstances, like being in jail when his daughter, Bailee Ann , was born.

"Everybody’s rock bottom is different. For me, it was realizing that I was the most qualified person to raise my daughter, and I wasn’t qualified. That scared me," he shared.

Jelly Roll continued, "I was like: 'I know her mother’s a piece of [expletive]. Her mother’s family isn’t able to raise this child. My family’s not able to raise this child. I’ve got to figure this out,'” also explaining that his now 15-year-old daughter's mother currently still struggles with addiction and more.

While he admitted he's not sure if anything else aside from having a child could have motivated him enough to change the trajectory of his life path, Jelly Roll remains humble about giving other people grace and extending that same grace to himself, too.

“I’m learning to forgive myself for the decisions I made when I was that young,” he said, adding, “I used to want to be happy. Now I just want to be useful.”
