When blueberries are in season like they are right now, I try to use as many as I can in as many ways as possible. For me, a bounty of berries is usually put to great use in quick breads , cobblers , salads , muffins or just as a tasty topping for Greek yogurt . But this summer, blueberries have gotten a little boost because they're the star ingredient in a viral drink: the blueberry iced latte .

What is the Viral Blueberry Latte?

This internet-famous drink originated in and is largely associated with The Nitro Bar , a Rhode Island-based coffee shop with four locations. While there are multiple user-generated interpretations on TikTok, the general formula involves making blueberry syrup or blueberry honey, adding your milk of choice, and topping it all off with a shot of espresso . Not only is the drink hyper-seasonal, but it's a simple method to add some pizzazz to your morning coffee routine.

How to Make the Viral Blueberry Latte

You can't have a blueberry latte without blueberry syrup, so that's where we're going to start. I cooked 1 1/2 cups of blueberries and 1/4 cup of honey (you can also use granulated sugar) over medium heat, pressing down on the berries to release their juices. Allow the syrup to come to a simmer, then strain and let the mixture cool.

Add some of the blueberry syrup to a tall glass, then fill with ice. Pour 1 cup of milk into the glass and then top with a shot of espresso.

What Did I Think of the Viral Blueberry Latte?

It was a treat! I don't personally love overly sweet fruity or candy-like flavors (peace and love to coffee creamers ) in my coffee and espresso, so I was a little wary of this drink. The very first sip was a big one-two punch of blueberry that took me by surprise but as I continued sipping I found the blueberry syrup to be a nice foil to the bitter espresso.

The more syrup you add, the sweeter and more berry-forward your drink will be, and more syrup will also make the drink a bit more colorful. If you don't have blueberries around, you could also use blackberries , strawberries or raspberries . In a pinch, you could also go for a spoonful of berry jam mixed with a bit of water to thin it out.

Overall, this drink was tasty, but it's not something I would make on the regular. That said, I am interested in trying blueberry syrup in my matcha lattes, which I think could be a winning combo and would make for a pretty drink, too.
