Fans Suspect Meryl Streep and Martin Short Are 'Soft Launching' Their Relationship in New Video

There may be a new celebrity couple emerging—that is, if a recent video is anything to judge by.

A new clip of Meryl Streep and Martin Short that surfaced on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Aug. 23 has got the internet talking, as fans jump to the conclusion that the duo might be "soft launching" their previously-rumored relationship.

Though The Devil Wears Prada actress explained the two have always maintained a solid friendship, footage of them attending the Only Murders in the Building premiere after party together does look rather... cozy .

In the snippet, the pair of longtime actors—who starred as cute couple Loretta Durkin and Oliver Putnam in the third season of the Hulu mystery series, which also features Selena Gomez and Steve Martin —tightly held hands, strolling side-by-side and appearing to chat sweetly during the function (neither could contain their smiles).

And in the comments of the social media post, fans noticed!

"Meryl over here soft launching I love it," one assumed , as another jumped the gun and sent well wishes to the non-confirmed couple: "So happy for both of them!"

"They’re holding hands! It’s true," a third noticed , along with several red heart emojis.

An additional commenter dubbed them "The most relevant power couple," while yet another added , "I love this for them so much 😭😭😭😭."

Meanwhile, someone else joked , "Steve Martin in this video is the definition of the 3rd wheel."

In October 2023, news broke that Streep and her husband of 45 years, Don Gummer , had been separated for six years, although they remain legally married.

Short, for his part, was married to Nancy Dolman until her 2010 death following a battle with ovarian cancer.

In January 2024, rumors swirled that he and his co-star had sparked up a real-life relationship after a photo of them from the 2024 Golden Globes went viral . He quickly shut down reports during an appearance on the Club Random with Bill Maher podcast . “We’re not a couple,” he said. “We are just very close friends.”
