Team USA soccer player Lynn Williams shed new light on the activities she suspects broke the gold medal she received during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.

Williams, who played with the U.S. Women’s National Team in the soccer final earlier this month, received a gold medal along with the rest of her teammates after they defeated Brazil 1-0 in the game on Aug. 10. The victory marked Team USA’s first gold in women’s soccer since 2012.

In a video Williams shared on TikTok on Thursday, Aug. 22, the soccer star admitted she “got carried away” while celebrating the win and wound up with a cold. She also ended up with what she described as the “world’s most expensive coaster,” a point she demonstrated by showing how the medal was no longer attached to the ribbon that typically allows medals like hers to hang around a champion’s neck.

The medal used to have a piece that held the ribbon in place, Williams explained. She then showed shocking footage of herself “swinging the thing around,” though “ironically,” that’s not what caused it to break. “I’m sure it didn’t help,” she quickly added, “but that’s not how it broke.”

The athlete then revealed that she was dancing when the medal broke free of its ribbon and hit the floor. “I had it on my shoulder, like a little purse, and I was just jumping, dancing, jumping, and I jumped down and it just fell off,” she recalled. “So everybody was dancing, and I was roaming around trying to get my medal off the ground.”

In addition to the missing ribbon, Williams’ gold medal now has a “dent,” a characteristic that she said makes it “definitely one of a kind.”

“Like I said, probably swinging it around didn’t help,” she told her social media followers. “But I just think that they should have made these better. They should’ve made them more sturdy. And honestly, I can’t be faulted for that.”

At the time she recorded her video, Williams said she wasn’t sure if she was going to get the medal fixed, but the International Olympic Committee was looking into it. “I have to prove to them that it was, in fact, damaged,” she explained.

If that doesn’t work out, Williams didn’t seem opposed to keeping the medal as it is. “Honestly I think it’s a cool, funny story,” she said.
