Seafood , in all its many forms, can be quite a polarizing cuisine. You either love it or hate it and if you hate it, you can probably list 1,000 reasons why. It’s fishy, there are bones, it’s not appetizing—the list could go on. And while yours truly whole-heartedly disagrees, you’re entitled to your opinion, despite how ill-informed it might be. For the seafood-averse, fresh fish is bad enough, but canned fish is a cardinal sin of the highest offense. And if I'm being honest, I used to feel that way, too.

Tinned fish, however, is having a moment, and with all the delicious options on the market today, our opinion on the previously sacrilegious ingredient has started to change. Brands like Fishwife and Siesta have been leading the charge in changing our perceptions of the controversial ingredient, and retailers like Trader Joe’s are starting to get in on the action, too.

Never one to shy away from a trend, the quirky grocery chain has continued to expand its offering of canned fish of all varieties, and one, in particular, has fans on the Trader Joe’s-focused subreddit sharing their very strong opinions one way or the other. The item in question might elicit a gasp from the fish haters out there, but Trader Joe’s officially added a vibrant tin of Calamari Pieces in Olive Oil to stores, and we’re dreaming of all the delicious recipes we can create.

Inside the intricately decorated tin is a mix of sliced calamari pieces, olive oil, and sea salt for a delicate yet straightforward flavor, making it the perfect addition to salads , pastas and even a quick paella. Even better than their endless versatility and delicious flavor is the incredible price of just $3.99 per tin, although prices may vary by location.

As expected, a few fans were less than enthused, with a few saying, “I tried one piece and then almost threw up.” Surprisingly, though, most of the discussion was fairly strong in favor of the ingredient and there were lots of recipes and tips on how to enjoy these tender “outstandingly delish” pieces of flavorful squid.

“These are so good, slightly heated in a pan. Threw in some garlic powder and dried parsley and oregano. Splash of lemon juice and eat with bread,” recommended one enthused fan. “I sautéed them with some onions, garlic and tomato sauce and had it over pasta and it was SO delicious,” shared another.

Although we’re new to the world of tinned fish, and it might take a moment to get acclimated, we'll definitely be adding this to our shopping cart on our next trip to TJ’s. How about you?
