Sigourney Weaver, 74, Puts on a Stylish Display in Rare Public Appearance

With the recent release of Alien: Romulus , there's been a renewed interest in the Alien franchise in its entirety—including iconic star Sigourney Weaver , who played Ellen Ripley.

Weaver doesn't appear in the franchise's latest installment, but the 74-year-old actress made a rare public appearance while attending the Venice International Film Festival this week, where she'll be receiving the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement Award.

Wearing a Chanel ensemble including white pleated pants, a black blazer, a black-and-white button-up shirt and a straw hat with a white black ribbon, Weaver waved at the cameras when she arrived at the Excelsior Pier.

During a press conference on August 28, the Oscar-nominee got choked up when a reporter thanked her for playing strong female characters.

"I take my inspiration from what I see as an actual woman," Weaver said. "We were not really getting our due, and to me women were always so capable, and we are everything. So the idea that the film world was using this much of the pie and we were like this—I feel like [the producers] just loved strong women and felt women were strong."

"And that's the funny thing," she added. "I'm always asked why I play strong women, and I'm always like, that's such a weird question, because I just play women. And women are strong, and women don't give up. You know why? We can't. We have to do it."

Weaver also shared that it makes her "happy" to think that her work might have helped to empower women, even contributing to the success of Kamala Harris .

“To think for one moment that my work would have anything to do with her rise makes me very happy, actually, because it’s true,” she said. “I have so many women who come and thank me.”
