While things in the Star Wars universe seem to be a bit wonky at the moment with series fatigue setting in and the cancelation of The Acolyte after just one season, there's one piece of the franchise that fans universally love: Andor .

The Star Wars prequel series based on Rogue One premiered in September 2022 to critical and audience success. An IGN review of the first season called it “ Star Wars like you’ve never seen it before” and “one of the very best TV shows of the year.”

Unsurprisingly, fans have been impatient for the Season 2 release, which has been delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes and general production issues that seem to be plaguing many of today’s shows.

Now that more information is available, here’s a look at Andor Season 2’s release date, episode count and everything else we know about it.

What is the release date for Andor Season 2?

The original release date for Andor S eason 2 was sometime in August 2024, but when the SAG-AFTRA strike began in July 2023 it was pushed back. Right now, it’s looking like the new season will drop sometime in 2025.

Although Disney has not announced a specific month or date, clues point to a potential early 2025 premiere. In a recent conversation with Rotten Tomatoes , lead actor Diego Luna revealed that some big cast rumors won’t be confirmed until “the beginning of next year.” Hopefully that means the new season will follow shortly after.

When will Andor Season 2 take place?

At Disney’s D23 event in August 2024, Luna gave more insight into what Season 2 will look like. “This second part will follow Cassian over the period of four years as he grows into the hero we see make the ultimate sacrifice in Rogue One ,” he said.

Kyle Soller , the actor who plays Deputy Inspector Syril Karn, told Esquire that Disney is "turning it up to 11" for the second season. "There's just more people, more planets, more worlds. There's an amazing storyline about this new group of people,” he shared. "What's amazing about dropping back in for this season is the time gaps that are going to be instituted to take you up the full five years before coming into Rogue One at the end.”

While that doesn’t exactly give fans a lot to run with, it’s clear that Andor S eason 2 events will take place over the course of about four years – a much longer period than the 12 months comprising Season 1.

"When we come back, it’ll be literally like a Friday, Saturday and Sunday," series creator Tony Gilroy told Deadline . "And then, we’ll jump a year, and then it’ll be, like, four or five days, and then we’ll jump a year, and then there’ll be another four or five days, and then we jump a year, and be another four or five days. Our last block is the last three days before Rogue One . So, the last shot will be walking into Rogue One . So, you can imagine that we have to do a lot of interlacing at the end, with the [ Star Wars ] calendar."

Will Andor Season 2 be the final season?

Unfortunately, knowing that Season 2 stops where Rogue One events start does spell the end for Andor .

Gilroy has confirmed that Season 2 will be the final season, which was "a decision born of survival, but it’s been creatively potent... It’s good to know there’s an ending coming.”

What is the plot of Andor Season 2?

In the Season 1 finale, viewers saw Cassian step fully into his identity as a rebel. He’s forced to rescue his ex-girlfriend Bix Caleen from Imperial forces and persuade Luthen Rael, a leader in the Rebellion, not to kill him. Afterward, he joins Luthen in his fight against the Empire.

“This first half was about him becoming a revolutionary and committing to it, and sort of marrying himself to it, and sort of the blood oath,” Gilroy told Polygon . “Cassian’s commitment to the cause is not in doubt. If it was about him becoming a revolutionary, then the second half is about him becoming a leader.”

Season 2 starts a whole year after the events of the Season 1 finale. And while Season 1 was focused more on Cassian’s personal journey, Season 2 may look more at the burgeoning Rebellion as a whole.

“So what we’re doing is, we’re showing in a very different way now — it’s not about becoming a revolutionary. It’s watching how the Alliance itself is going to put pressure on people,” Gilroy said in his Polygon interview. “Are you in? Or are you out? What happens to the original gangsters, the Saw Gerreras and Luthen Raels? How hard it is to build a coalition? How much betrayal there is, how much failure there is — there’s some canonical material that we have the opportunity to play with. So it’s still a show about regular people making incredible decisions in difficult times.”

How many episodes are in Andor Season 2?

Like Season 1, Andor S eason 2 will be 12 episodes long. Based upon what Gilroy and some of the show’s actors have said, the season will be split into four parts – with each three-episode increment covering a year of time. At the end, the show’s events will have caught up with the Rogue One timeline.

Will K-2SO be in Andor season 2?

Aside from the return of Orson Krennic, K-2SO – who had a major part in Rogue One – will also feature in Andor S eason 2. Just like in Rogue One , he will be voiced and portrayed by actor Alan Tudyk .

As for why the infamous droid was absent in Season 1, Gilroy said it was all part of the storytelling. “It’s difficult to carry an Imperial droid around with you and not draw all kinds of attention. It’s a difficult piece of luggage,” he explained at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in August 2022.

Luna added, “We have five years [before the events in Rogue One ]. If [Cassian] knew K2 back then there would be no journey to go through.”

Is there an Andor Season 2 trailer?

While there isn’t a trailer out for Season 2 yet, some clips were shown at the D23 event in August 2024. However, this footage is only available to D23 attendees, so fans at home will have to wait until the trailer release to see official shots of the upcoming season.
