Robert Irwin 's love for nature–a trait he seemingly inherited from his late father, Steve Irwin –has officially earned him high honors with Prince William .
Just one day before the 20th anniversary of his legendary father 's sudden passing, the 20-year-old conservationist and media personality revealed that he has been selected as one of the official ambassadors for the Earthshot Prize –a program started by the Prince of Wales back in 2020, to help encourage new sustainability efforts, solutions and ways to protect natural environments and ecosystems across the globe.
Like The Crocodile Hunter star, Robert has gained a massive following by using his platform to educate the masses on the importance of protecting the planet's most critical resources through his original wildlife photography , videos documenting animal rescues , work at his family's famed Australia Zoo and massive online presence totaling over 6 million followers on Instagram and a whopping 7.5 million fans on TikTok.
"My entire life has been centered around conservation and continuing an important legacy that my dad and my family started," Robert said in a clip uploaded to both platforms on Tuesday, Sept. 3 . "And it's given me a real deep appreciation for the need to repair and restore our ecosystems."
"The Earthshot Prize does such a great job at not only creating that really broad, large scale societal and environmental change , but it also supports the on-the-ground initiatives, the cutting-edge technology, the most passionate individuals and organizations. Being an Earthshot Prize Ambassador means I'll get to take you guys along on the journey as we find out what some of the Earthshot Finalists are doing," he added. "Really showcasing the hope that we have for the future."
As for what the awards entail, along with the prestigious title, the selected finalists have the opportunity to receive funding for trailblazing efforts aiming to protect and restore nature, clean the air, revive marine life, provide more eco-friendly or waste-free options, and address other climate change -related issues.
"Every year over the course of this critical decade, five Winners with the best chance of helping to achieve our Earthshots will be awarded £1 million each to scale their solutions, with all 15 Finalists receiving tailored support from our global alliance of partners," according to an official statement on the organization's website.
"By spotlighting environmental innovators and their solutions, we aim to spark the world’s collective imagination and drive the mindset of urgent optimism and action."
