Jenna Ortega has leveraged her status as Netflix’s new “it girl” to that of a blockbuster-worthy actress. She stars as Astrid Deetz – daughter of Winona Ryde r’s Lydia Deetz – in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice , in theaters Sept. 6.
In an August appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon , Ortega shared some of her experience with the Beetlejuice sequel. " Michael [Keaton] is the coolest,” she said. “Obviously, a character like Beetlejuice is so iconic and so loved, and Lydia [Winona Ryder] is the coolest character on the planet. Just everything about it, I was terrified.”
But the filming seems to have gone well. Ortega told Vanity Fair that it was “probably the happiest I had ever seen Tim [Burton] on a set,” and that the shoot was “a celebration of everyone being back together and doing practical effects again.”
From her start as a child actor to starring in the newest Beetlejuice , here’s a look at Jenna Ortega’s career – and exactly how much that career has padded her bank account.
How did Jenna Ortega get her start?
Jenna Ortega, born in 2002, was 9 years old when she starred in a Colgate toothpaste commercial – her first acting gig. Ortega has stated that her parents “have no interest whatsoever in [Hollywood]” (her mom is an ER nurse and her dad works in the California district attorney’s office) but they supported her journey to become an actress nonetheless.
Ortega’s first TV acting credit was in the sitcom Rob in 2012. Then she landed a guest role on an episode of CSI: NY that same year, before entering the film scene as the president’s daughter in 2013’s Iron Man 3 .
She continued to build her resume with small roles in movies and TV shows until 2014, when she landed her first big recurring role as young Jane in The CW’s Jane the Virgin . She appeared in 30 episodes, until the series finale in 2019. She also starred in Disney’s Stuck in the Middle from 2016-2018.
By then, Ortega had cemented herself as a working actress capable of larger roles, and in 2019 she got her first Netflix job as Ellie Alves on season 2 of You .
This number is likely to shoot up as she continues building her reputation and acclaim in Hollywood, which has been bolstered by her role in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice . She also starred in a recent music video for the song Taste by Sabrina Carpenter , another Disney alum.
Ortega’s salary for her starring role as Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s show Wednesday (2022-) is unconfirmed. However, Cosmopolitan compared her with the cast of Stranger Things to try to get a better idea.
According to Cosmo , the young stars of Stranger Things were making $30,000 per episode for the first two seasons of the show. In Season 3, they were able to negotiate this up to a whopping $250,000 per episode due to the success of the show.
Unlike the Stranger Things actors, Ortega was not unknown coming into the production of Wednesday – so she likely earned more than that $30,000-per-episode starting amount. Whether she will earn as much as $250,000 per episode for the second season remains to be seen, but the show was a hit for Netflix and readers can be sure Ortega is well compensated for it.
How much is Jenna Ortega getting paid for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ?
Salaries for the cast of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) have not been revealed publicly. However, an unconfirmed report from Showbiz Galore places Ortega’s at $750,000.
If true, this would be the lowest paycheck of the main cast; which may not be surprising given Ortega’s rookie status compared to her co-stars.
For some, Ortega may be best known for her TV credits, including Jane the Virgin (2014-2019), Stuck in the Middle (2016-2018), You (2019) and Wednesday (2022). But she’s been in movies just as long as has really been stacking up projects in recent years.
Some of Ortega’s most popular movie roles have included:
Annie in Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)
Katie Torres in Yes Day (2021)
Vada Cavell in The Fallout (2021)
Tara Carpenter in Scream (2022)
Lorraine in X (2022)
Tara Carpenter in Scream VI (2023)
Astrid Deetz in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)
Has Jenna Ortega won any awards?
Ortega has been nominated for an Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG Award and People’s Choice Award, all for her leading role in Wednesday . For the same role, she’s won a Kid’s Choice Award, MTV Movie + TV Award, Critics Choice Super Award, Imagen Award and Saturn Award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.
She also won a 2024 People’s Choice Award for her work in Scream VI , among other accolades.
