You may know Stephen Colbert as a razor-sharp comedian and actor, talk show host and mega Lord of the Rings fan. But what you may not know is that he's a major food lover. Later in September, Stephen and his wife, Evie McGee Colbert, are coming out with their first cookbook, Does This Taste Funny?: Recipes Our Family Loves.

But the cookbook won't be the first time Stephen Colbert showed off his love for food. I mean, the man developed Americone Dream , his delicious ice cream flavor for Ben & Jerry's . On the Late Show with Stephen Colbert , he regularly cooks alongside guest celebrity chefs like Jamie Oliver and Jose Andres.

Colbert fans are familiar with the host's culinary interests, so food sometimes comes up on the show. During one particular show taping an audience member asked about Colbert's favorite cookie. "I do like Mallomars because they're a seasonal treat. That's my favorite store-bought cookie," he said. If he wants a homemade cookie, Colbert said his go-to is an oatmeal cookie , but with his own special twist. Instead of making oatmeal raisin cookies, Colbert makes oatmeal-cherry cookies by adding dried cherries .

Why Stephen Colbert Adds Dried Cherries to Oatmeal Cookies

If you think oatmeal raisin is a classic that cannot be improved upon, Colbert would like a word. Dried tart cherries add a tangy-sweet pop that can complement the sweetness of oatmeal cookies. To take the treat from good to great, Colbert adds that he likes to soak the dried cherries in rum before stirring them into the cookie dough.

Soaking the dried fruit in rum plumps up the cherries and infuses them with boozy flavor. You strain the cherries before adding them to the cookie dough, but don't toss the rum. Colbert likes to use the cherry-flavored spirit for cocktails.

Start by soaking dried pitted cherries in rum for 24 hours. The next day, drain the cherries, reserving the infused rum in a container if desired (and you should definitely do this). Make your favorite oatmeal cookie recipe (like this one ), then stir in the soaked cherries instead of raisins. Serve the cookies with a cherry rum cocktail, if you're feeling festive.
