'Elsbeth' is Back for Season 2–With an Emmy-Winning Premiere Guest!

The quirkiest lawyer detective in New York City is back on the case and preparing to annoy the NYPD for a second season. The CBS drama, which is a slightly goofy spinoff of The Good Wife and The Good Fight, follows Elsbeth Tascioni ( Carrie Preston ) as she trades Chicago courtrooms for New York City crime scenes. She's working alongside the police as a consent decree lawyer, meant to accompany officers on investigations to ensure they're operating by the book.

But as was revealed at the end of the pilot, Elsbeth was actually sent to New York by the DOJ to report back on the potential corruption of NYPD Captain Wagner ( Wendell Pierce ). By the end of the season, the status quo had changed, but only enough to keep Elsbeth working NYPD cases for the foreseeable future.

Elsbeth Season 2 is set to premiere on Thursday, October 17 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and Paramount+.

Who is in the Elsbeth Season 2 cast?

Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni

Preston reprises her role from The Good Wife and The Good Fight as a very successful but very unorthodox attorney who is rarely caught not carrying multiple bags. She's now in New York and putting both her knowledge of the law and her people skills to work by befriending and then arresting murderers.

Wendell Pierce as Captain C.W. Wagner

The stoic and sophisticated NYPD police captain wasn't super excited about Elsbeth's presence in his precinct, but he did his best to make her feel welcome while not knowing she was actually helping the DOJ investigate him and his nonprofit foundation for corruption.

Carra Patterson as Officer Kaya Blanke

Elsbeth immediately befriended Officer Blanke, a quiet, crafty, pop culture-loving cop hoping to make detective. She was put on the fast track to detective at the end of the first season.

Fredric Lehne as Lieutenant Dave Noonan

Lieutenant Noonan was one of Wagner's most trusted colleagues right up until it became clear that Noonan was actually committing crimes on Wagner's behalf. He's now been carried off to prison, leaving a mess in his wake.

How did Elsbeth Season 1 end?

If you need your memory jogged of how things ended last time out, here are some major plot points from the Elsbeth Season 1 finale.

Wagner is innocent

The kindly captain turned out to be as harmless as he seemed, and his formerly trusted lieutenant Noonan was arrested for abusing nonprofit funds and running a sweatshop on behalf of Wagner. Wagner was cleared of all suspicion.

Elsbeth was nearly sent back to Chicago

Wagner was furious that she had betrayed his trust all season long by secretly investigating him, so he told her to go back to the Windy City. It took the whole season finale, but eventually Wagner changed his mind.

Elsbeth and Kaya got new jobs

Wagner relented (as people always do with Elsbeth) and gave her an actual position investigating crimes with the NYPD. Kaya was also put on the fast track to becoming a detective, meaning the unlikely BFF duo of Blanke and Tascioni will continue to solve crimes with a pep in their step in Season 2. Elsbeth also now has a dog named Gonzo.

What happens in Season 2 of Elsbeth ?

A plot of "Subscription to Murder," the Elsbeth Season 2 premiere, reads, "When a womanizing finance executive is found stabbed to death after a night at the opera, Elsbeth suspects an obsessed opera lover (Nathan Lane) was driven to murder because of a ringing cell phone. Meanwhile, Elsbeth, Captain Wagner and Kaya must adjust to changes in the precinct as the consequences of Noonan’s wrongdoing continue to loom."
