Pizza comes in many different styles, each with unique characteristics and everyone seems to have their favorite type—maybe it's the crust (thick or thin) or the toppings that are a make-or-break factor for you. We could spend all day listing out some of our favorite pizzas , but one type of pizza recently caught our eye and we have to try it right away!

Content creator @diaryovamermaid shared an upside-down pizza on TikTok and we are rushing out to grab pizza dough right now!

    What is an Upside-Down Pizza?

An upside-down pizza is one in which the usual order of ingredients is reversed, starting with the toppings and finishing with the crust. There are two main types of upside-down pizza including an Upside-Down Deep-Dish (or Pan) Pizza and a Sicilian-Style Upside-Down Pizza.

The influencer in this video created an upside-down cast iron skillet pizza by placing cheese and meats first in the skillet, followed by the sauce, and then the dough on top. Cast iron holds heat really well and is naturally nonstick, so the pan helps guarantee a crispy crust and a pizza that will flip out of the pan easily.

Once the pizza was finished baking, she simply flipped it out of the pan so that the crust was on the bottom and the toppings were on top. This type of pizza helps the dough stay crispy on the bottom because it isn't sitting under all the toppings and helps the toppings cook thoroughly, plus the sauce gets a little caramelized, which deepens its flavor.

How Do You Make Upside-Down Pizza?

If you're like us and want to use store-bought dough, allow the dough to come to room temperature so that it’s easier to stretch. You should roll or stretch your pizza dough to fit the size of your pan, making sure it covers all of the toppings.

Start by adding a generous drizzle of olive oil in the bottom of the skillet to help prevent sticking. Build your pizza in reverse order (cheese and toppings, then sauce), the snuggle the pizza dough on top. You can make the crust as thick or as thin as you like. Stick it in a 400° oven and let it bake until the crust is fully cooked, which should take around 30 minutes.

Remove the pizza from the oven, let it cool for a couple of minutes, then using oven mitts very carefully invert it onto a cutting board. Dinner is served!
